Horse owners and vets warned of flavivirus threat

Horse owners are being advised of the threat this summer of mosquito-borne flaviviruses such as Kunjin and Murray Valley Encephalitis (MVE). Owners can provide some protection for their animals by using repellents, or keeping horses indoors at times of high mosquito activity (dawn and dusk) and minimising potential mosquito breeding areas. There have been no confirmed cases of flavivirus in horses in SA since last April.
